angel fire

Now that Munch is too big for the child carrier backpack, she identifies "hike" as a four letter word, both literally and figuratively. "Hiking" used to mean nothing more than "snack time" and she would sit happily perched on her daddy's back for hours. Now she throws a fit when forced to walk for no apparent purpose.

We just got home from Angel Fire, where we spent almost a week hanging out with LD's family and coercing Munch into the occasional trek around the area's mountain terrain. MIL graciously blames the altitude (invoked frequently by locals to explain the tourists' more moronic behavior) for her grand-daughter's misconduct.
 Motivation
In a shady spot along the dry river bed we shared a picnic and, for those of age, a bottle of sweet vermouth.
I love this area of northern New Mexico- the city of Santa Fe, hiking into the Rio Grande gorge, skiing outside Taos, the green chiles and honey-coated sopapillas.  But this time there was one very specific and stunningly beautiful reason for our trip.
This is Munch and Wow's only* cousin, born one month before Wow. LD and Munch got to meet him when he was just a few weeks old.  He's impossibly lanky with an oval shaped face and a large smile. Although he resembles his mother, he reminds me of how I had speculated LD's children would look. You know, prior to their actually being born. The first time he and Wow were introduced he, in a most sincere showing of affection, scooted the distance towards his cousin, reached his hand out to grab hold of Wow's shirt, and, shaking with excitement, tried to gum his cheek.

There was another special occasion celebrated while we were there (and a reminder of why I don't bake) -

Happy birthday Gammy.

** And while on the "only cousin" topic - mom recently announced at the dinner table that if my very-happy-to-be-single sister did not "produce a female heir" by the time Munch turned 16, Munch would inherit all of my mom's jewelry. I think Ashley and I both choked on whatever it was we were eating at the time.

  2. Sounds like a lovely trip, over all.

As for hiking- my parents spent ages trying to get my sister and I to take even very short hikes at the local large hill. What eventually worked were, essentially, bribes: stories told if we made it to particular landmarks. In retrospect, those landmarks can be walked to (by adults) in maybe 15-20 minutes... Go figure. This is a complex way of saying: you are not alone.

    1. Ha. We know a thing or two about bribery, which we choose to refer to as "negotiation" :)
